Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are tiny posts that Dr. Abdel-Hak inserts into the empty sockets where your permanent teeth used to be. After placement, the implants fuse with your natural bone, providing a foundation for crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth. If you brush, floss, and visit Ford Dental Group for routine checkups, they may even last for the rest of your life.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer various benefits, including:

  • Confidence
  • Look like natural teeth
  • Longest-lasting tooth replacement option
  • Prevent bone loss
  • Don’t affect adjacent teeth
  • Easy to care for
  • Durability
  • Improved oral health
  • Clearer speech
  • Easier biting and chewing

Dental implants are also convenient. You don’t have to remove and soak them overnight like dentures. Instead, you brush and floss them like your permanent teeth.

Who can get dental implants?

If you want dental implants, you need healthy gums and enough bone to support them. If Dr. Abdel-Hak discovers signs of gum disease or low bone volume during an oral exam, he might recommend a prerequisite treatment, like scaling and root planing or a bone graft. If your gums and jaw appear healthy, Dr. Abdel-Hak continues with treatment.

What does getting dental implants involve?

At Ford Dental Group, getting dental implants typically takes three visits. If you’re a busy professional and can’t make time, Dr. Abdel-Hak and the team offer same-day dental implants. Same-day dental implants are “immediate-load,” meaning you can bite and chew with them right after placement.

First dental implants visit

Dr. Abdel-Hak numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic and inserts a series of titanium posts into your empty tooth sockets. After surgery, he writes a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics and provides recovery instructions.

Second dental implants visit

When the implants finish integrating with your jaw (which can take months), you return to Ford Dental Group. Dr. Abdel-Hak takes digital impressions of your mouth and sends them to a nearby dental lab. The lab uses your impressions to manufacture custom crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

If you’re getting a crown, Dr. Abdel-Hak might use the CEREC® milling machine to manufacture it onsite, preventing the need for a third visit.

Third dental implants visit

When the dental lab finishes your custom restorations, you visit Ford Dental Group for the last time. Dr. Abdel-Hak attaches your crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures to the implants, polishes them, and explains how to care for them.
